Crewe Town Council

Since the formation of the South Cheshire Concert Band in November 2014 we have been fortunate to receive regular support from Crewe Town Council, in the form of grants to help with the purchase of equipment and music.

We are very grateful for this support and hope it will continue in the future.

Musicians wanted

South Cheshire Concert Band has vacancies for players of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, who have reached the standard of Associated Board Grade 5 or equivalent. We also have a vacancy for an experienced keyboard player.

If you would like to join us, please contact our secretary via the contact form on our Home page or come along to a rehearsal on a Wednesday evening at Wistaston Memorial Hall, Crewe. CW2 8EZ

Don't be shy, come and try it out!

Musical Opportunities.

As part of the wider structure of the Band, we provide opportunities for ensemble playing for Band members.

We currently have a clarinet choir, a saxophone ensemble and a brass ensemble. These are organised and run by players from the relevant sections and are open to all Band members.

Please contact us for further information about these groups.

Recent events

We are very pleased to announce that the Band has now reformed and we held our first rehearsal since March 2020 on the evening of Wednesday 1st September.

We have continued to rehearse every week and have been able to do so safely by taking care to observe the Government's guidance relating to Covid 19, namely maintaining social distancing, ensuring our rehearsal room is well ventilated and making use of the hand washing / sanitising facilities provided in the Memorial Hall.

We had planned to give a Christmas Concert for members of the local community and had also been asked to carry out at least one Christmas engagement for Crewe Town Council but, due to the on going concerns about the spread of the virus, these had to be cancelled.

However, we were very pleased to receive a booking for our first performance since the start of the pandemic. This was for the Sandbach Branch of the Royal British Legion and took place on the evening of 12th March.

This was a private engagement and our performance was very well received by everyone present. We all enjoyed being able to play for an audience again and have been asked to return to give another performance in the future. This was a private engagement rather than one for members of the public but we are now also making plans for give at least two concerts in 2022 which will be community events, open to everyone who wishes to attend.

One of these concerts will be a Remembrance Concert on the evening of Saturday 12th November 2022 which will take place at St Chad's Church in Wybunbury. The concert programme will be made up of a variety of pieces which are suitable for the occasion and further details will be given in our 'Concert Dates' section nearer the time.

On Saturday 16th July the Band was engaged to play at a Garden Fete in Astbury near Congleton. This was held at Astbury House and was a fund raising event in aid of St Mary's Church in Astbury. The Church is being re-ordered and the money raised will be used for this project.

The event was very well supported by members of the local community and we were pleased to be able to provide a programme of background music for two hours during the afternoon.

The weather was beautiful, everyone enjoyed the event and our contribution was very well received.

Clarinet Group.

On Saturday 24th April 2022 one of the clarinettists in the Band was married at St Mary Magdalene's Church in Alsager and our Clarinet Quintet was invited to play at her wedding.

They played incidental music during the arrival and departure of the guests and, during the signing of the Register, played " Can't Help Falling in Love", a very appropriate piece which was chosen by the bride and groom.

It was a lovely occasion and everyone present enjoyed the music they played.

On Sunday 24th July we will be playing at St Peter's Church in Minshull Vernon. We will be accompanying the hymns for the morning service and will also be playing ingoing and outgoing voluntaries.

The Royal Cheshire Show

On the evening of Monday 20th June we were invited to play at the Opening Service for the Royal Cheshire County Show 2022.

This was a very enjoyable engagement to undertake as the Show reflects some very important aspects of life in Cheshire and there were approximately 300 exhibitors and members of the various organising committees in the congregation.

Our contribution was very well received and we were complimented on our performance by several of the congregation and visiting clergy afterwards.
